Personal work - Light as day
The bleak autumn days in the small town of Hyvinkää in Finland
Personal work: Light as day
On days like this I like to leave a light on as I leave the house. A bulb really. It's another bleak November morning, not that you can really tell the time of day - a good day for driving around the town none the less. The absence of shadows slows the moments from slipping away. When nightfall catches me by surprise, it's good to know I left the lonely bulb burning.
The project is about light - natural as well as artificial.
During the winter days, towards the end of the year, the sun hardly rises above the horizon. Completely overcast skies can hide the sun for days. There is an absence of shadows and time seems to stand still. The natural light has no direction. It only gets dimmer as the day moves towards dusk. As the natural light fades it is replaced by artificial sources, which come to define the passing of time.
The project is photographed in a small town of Hyvinkää in Southern Finland. Highway and rail connections make Hyvinkää one of the suburban commuter centers of greater Helsinki area. The small 19th century village experienced rapid growth towards the end of the century as Finland industrialised. Today Hyvinkää has a population of 45 000.
